Australia, The Beautiful

Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman's movie Australia, which had its world premiere today is getting good, but not fantastic reviews from homeland news outlets.

The Envelope gathered a number of reviews from Australian papers and the general consensus is that both Nicole, Hugh and the sweeping backdrop of the Australian countryside are visually stunning, the movie falls short of the high expectations put upon it to become an instant classic.

Criticized as being too long and overly theatrical, the movie is still being heralded as a solid one, with the performances from Jackman and possibly soon-to-be retiring Kidman receiving praise and is predicted to do well at the box office.

Who said there's anything wrong with a little big-screen eye-candy?

Vogue Fashion Fund Attendees Kick Up Their Heels

It was a smattering of high-falutin' fashionistas in attendance at the 5th Anniversary of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund at Skylight Studios in NYC last night.

A serene-faced Charlize Theron poured herself into a black dress and posed with over-the-top fashion designer John Galliano, who favored a top hat adorned with daisies for the evening. He likes to keep it simple, that one.

Television couple Blake Lively and Penn Badgley enjoyed a night out together at the event, while model Agyness Deyn opted for a less conventional look in a pair of sky-high red heels.

And here we are, taking a moment to salute Diane von Furstenberg for simply existing and looking fabulous while doing so. Cheers, darling!

News Bites: Britney Spears And A Mystery Man

Britney "Someone Bust Me Outta Jail, Y'All!" Spears had dinner at Sur in Los Angeles last night with a mystery man. Who is this tall, dark, and handsome stranger? Has Britney, seen here in a simple brown turtleneck and jeans, gotten to the point where she's ready to date again? In that new documentary coming out she says that "There's no excitement, there's no passion," in her life right now. Does this chief fit the bill?

Angelina Jolie is definitely taking over Tom Cruise's part in the spy thriller Edwin A. Salt. Will this be finished before February, because that's when she said she was quittin' the biz. "I'm working on a film called Salt. And it's with [Bone Collector director] Phillip Noyce. And that's it." Angie's role as a CIA agent falsely accused of being a Russian spy has been reimagined as a woman. If Cruise was in it....let's not even go there.

Tyra Banks is giving one of her former Top Model contestants the ultimate gift. Isis King, who was the first transsexual contestant on the reality show, will be having her sex reassignment surgery paid for by Banks. Banks has taped a show in which she reveals to King that she's giving her the surgery gratis. King, who couldn't afford the $35,000 the surgery costs said that "it feels like I woke up."

Natalie Portman Stays Cool On Ice

On the set of Love and Other Impossible Pursuits, ice skating proves to be a possible pursuit for its star Natalie Portman. The petite ivy-leaguer managed to skate around with during filming with only an occasional fall.

And who knows? Maybe the face-plant was scripted. Brainy Natalie seems like the kind of girl with a long list of hidden talents, so it makes it hard to believe that anything exists that she can't do like a pro.

Amy Winehouse Retrieves Her Beehive

Was she keeping it in that cotton candy machine that she likes to combine the coke wraps with? Because it's looking a little more yarnlike than usual. Amy Winehouse stepped out of her crackden to re-introduce her signature beehive to the world. It's been awhile.

Word is that she just went around the corner to her old house to pick up something, and quickly came back to let the beehive rest. It's been in seclusion and needs to be brought back into society gently so it doesn't skitter back under the bed.

As for Amy herself, she reportedly finally went to visit her husband Blake Fielder-Civil down at the rehab but didn't leave until 4 pm. So she was in a cab for five minutes until she realized that she would be turned away when she got there due to visiting hours being over. So she went out to the pub until 4 AM instead. Perhaps cabs are hard to catch in England and she just thought she'd make use of the one she had?

Donald Trump Has A 'Happy Heart'

Donald Trump and his silent wife Melania (seriously, does she talk?) were among the rich celebrities last night who attended the Happy Hearts Fund 2008 ball "A Masquerade in Venice" to benefit children in disaster areas at Cipriani in NYC.

Did Melania forget her glasses or is she just not having any fun?

Beneath trapeze artists and other assorted circusy fun, Trump and wife were joined by Wyclef Jean, Seth Meyers, Petra Nemcova, Kevin Spacey, Molly Sims, and Marisa Miller.

People seemed to mostly nix the masks. It gets in the way, Is it just me does Melania Trump's silence mean she doesn't actually speak English? Is that how he did it?

Will Smith Premieres 'Seven Pounds,' Continues Box Office Domination

Popular kid Will Smith stars in Seven Pounds with Rosario Dawson, pairing him up again with the director of The Pursuit of Happyness. The trailer hints that Smith's character's main motivation in live is changing the lives of seven strangers, but beyond that remains pretty mysterious.

It looks to be a warming-the-cockles-of-your-heart type of movie, premiering just in time for the holiday season.

The certifiably fascinating movie star talked recently on the red carpet about how he's grown into the highest paid actor in Hollywood and what he thinks the future holds. Smith said, "I think that the next ten years of my career are going to be the real sweet spot. I think I found real focus, I think I have more command of my tool."

Hot. He has command of his tool. What's not to love about that?

Madonna Is The New New Face Of Louis Vuitton

Even though Madonna's in the middle of a nasty divorce, her career couldn't be doing better.

The Hard Candy singer has enjoyed a star-studded concert tour both on stage and in the audience and is now getting a hefty payday from Louis Vuitton.

Madge is receiving a $10 million check from the luxury designer to star in their 2009 marketing campaign, according to Page Six. Well, she's paid enough for that face of hers. It's about time it returned the favor.
